Bubbles

Recently, I was challenged to create several images having to do with water for a juried show.
That got me thinking: I had photographed flowers looking through a wine glass and loved the distortion that the facets created.
Now, I wanted to fill the glass with water, preferably fizzy water, and see how the view was through the glass. Then I added herbs, flowers, and vegetables and observed the tiny bubbles clinging to the surface of the object. Out of five images submitted to the show, I had two accepted.
"Bejeweled" is one of them.

Last Vestiges of Ice

Last Vestiges of Ice

Something I had not done previously, but now value is going back to the same place at different times and under different conditions.
After some thawing and refreezing, the stream I had photographed before had a new phenomenon waiting for me.
The water level had dropped but the spray had frozen on hanging branches and left what looked to me like little dancing shirts - tutus!

Winter Surprises

Winter Surprises

Winter walks can be very rewarding. All you need is sharp eyes and curiosity.
Great Blue Herons like to roost in trees but never have I seen one in a
snow-covered tree. They like to be close to open water so that they can still fish.

Rare Orchid

Rare Orchid

Going for a walk through some wetlands, I spy several tiny pink orchids that I had never seen before. They needed an ID from a Rutgers botany friend. The name is 'rose pogonia' similar to 'Dragon's Mouth' but more delicate. They measure about 3 inches and have no leaves yet.

Tiny Lichens

Tiny Lichens

Going through daily life, sometimes my curiosity takes over and I just have to bend down and look for what's in that crack of my wooden stairs. With the 100 mm macro lens, I can detect tiny stems with a red tip. That's English Soldier lichen only 2 mm tall. Then you wonder what else you have been missing that's so small. Many different lichens and mosses populate the woods. Have a look yourself!

Dew Drops

Dew Drops

I love to stroll through my garden armed with a 100 mm macro lens to capture dew drops in cobwebs. to get the tiny droplets into focus and, if I am really lucky, to see tiny worlds within.

The Attraction Of Water

The Attraction Of Water

From early childhood on, I loved the water. Be it the beaches in Holland and England, the lakes in Austria or the warm ocean in Yugoslavia. Each had its advantages. Although not a strong swimmer, I do like to spend time on the water. In Maine it's sailing with friends, kayaking on ponds and experiencing the ever changing ocean. Sometimes, I leave the house with a plan on how I want to shoot a certain subject. Yesterday, I decided to capture waves crashing on the rocks at mid-tide with a long shutter speed. There is a dreamy quality to these images: the green seaweed floating on the surface and the white foamy waves belie the actual force of impact.

The Path Of Inspiration

The Path Of Inspiration

When I look back at my life, I did not follow the path of a typical German girl. I grew up in the back of a VW bug, had parents who loved to travel and see the world. I grew up with art and music, but also nature. I can still see the influence my mother had on me. She made me SEE and NOTICE.

I went to England, France and Italy to study languages, and to Princeton, NJ to be an au-pair. I met my husband 10 days after I arrived in 1969, got married in 73 and learned to be a pilot. Traveled the world some more but didn’t photograph until after my husband’s passing in 1992.
A winter’s walk along the D&R Canal changed my life as I captured frost flowers on the water. The resulting images prompted me to take a course at the NY Institute of Photography. This was the beginning of my passion.
It began with flower and butterfly images from my garden, creating photographic note cards, then prints, and being discovered by a member of Gallery 14, in nearby Hopewell, NJ, where I became a member in 2005-2011
The discipline of working toward annual themed exhibits expanded my choice of subjects – from Mt Desert Island, intimate flower portraits, Frank Gehry architecture, reflections in glass and water to trees in motion.
Starting a gallery with a friend in 2011 was very educational but also draining. When Hurricane Irene flooded the place and my mother died at the same time, I said goodbye to galleries. Instead I joined a small group of painters and helped found ART+10. I’ve had individual and group exhibits with them and am enjoying myself.

My family was invited to Mt Desert Island, ME in 1983. I’ve spent time there every summer since. It has become my spiritual home. It has given me inspiration for my work, and nourishment for my soul.

My wish is to share the beauty that you might never see, and the wonder and awe before nature’s creations.
